Your First Pads: You Need All Four

Your First Pads: You Need All Four

Helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads. This is not a ranked list: a beginner needs every one of them. Wrist guards take a forward fall, elbow pads are what you land on going backwards, and knee pads let you drop on purpose instead of fighting it.

There is no order of importance here, and any list that gives you one is wrong. A beginner falls in every direction, so all four pieces earn their place on day one. Dropping a piece is something you earn later, once you know which falls you actually have.

Wrist guards take the forward fall, because the instinct to catch yourself on your hands is faster than any decision you could make. Elbow pads take the backward one: going over backwards, your elbows hit before anything else, and that is the fall nobody expects.

Knee pads change what falling means. With them you can drop forward on purpose instead of fighting to stay up, and a controlled drop is how you stop a wobble before it becomes a real fall. The helmet is the one you will wear a hundred times for nothing and once for everything.
